Intent
- Pupils will achieve a sense of their own identity by investigating and asking questions about people and events in the past. Understanding how the past was different to the present and the people of other times and places may have had different values and attitudes from our own.
- Pupils will develop the skills required to be a young historian.
- Pupils will understand chronology as the arranging of events in appropriate time order Thus they will achieve a sense of their own identity in relation to time.
- Pupils will learn to be historians by evaluating and questioning contemporaneous evidence.
- Pupils will use appropriate historical vocabulary
Implementation
- Pupils will learn about key characters and periods of History using an enquiry based approach to learning. (Find the answers to key questions).
- Pupils learning will be enhanced through trips and visiting speakers. They will learn to make connections using previous learning in order to develop disciplinary thinking skills.
- The curriculum will use skills based objectives that will become progressively more challenging (e.g observing- describing- comparing and contrasting-predicting).
- Time lines will provide starting point to all historical periods being studied. Pupils in early years will use stories in order to sequence events including their own lives. Timelines will include all eras under study at Whittington and key events in History. UKS2 will create a timeline using a pre- existing scale.
- Anachronisms or Focus Pictures will provide an initial focal point for each topic- in order to elicit discussion and further develop disciplinary thinking skills.
- Key vocabulary will be presented developmentally at the start of a topic and revisited at the end. This will be undertaken collaboratively in Years 1 and 2 – as multiple choice in Terms 1 and 2 of Year 2- leading on to individual responses in Years 3 and 4 . UKS2 pupils will answer more specific key questions that embeds the key vocabulary.
Enrichment Opportunities
In addition to curriculum lesson time there are:
- An out of school visit each year will be of an historical nature.
- In some year groups visitors will be invited to school to speak about a certain aspect of history.
- Year 3 and 4 will take part in a history museum experience in school.
- Whole School history day will investigate many historical periods.
