Medical
Parents are required to inform the school office of any relevant medical history that may affect your
child’s general development and education in school.
An NHS nurse will carry out height and weight checks with Reception children and those in Year 6.
Parents are notified of this visit in advance and may opt not to have their child weighed or measured.
Routine vision tests are also carried out. Parents are also advised in advance of these and will be
informed of any significant findings by the Health Authority.
If a child becomes ill during school hours we will make every effort to contact you via the emergency
telephone number you provide us – please ensure that we are informed of any changes.
Please note – 
It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure inhalers/EpiPens are up to date.
Medical Appointments
Where possible, all medical appointments should be made outside of school hours. We appreciate for hospital and urgent appointments this may not be possible. In this instance, please contact the school office with a copy of the appointment confirmation. We request you do not arrive to collect your child without prior communication. Please can you ensure you avoid collection between 3.00pm and 3.20pm.
If Your Child is Unwell
If your child contracts an infection which means that they are absent, the school follows guidelines
about when children should return to school in order to avoid the spread of infections. In order for
parents to make a decision about when their child should return to school the guidelines are accessible
via the NHS website, and alternatively parents can contact the school office for advice.
If your child is sick or has diarrhoea, they must not come back into school for at least 48 hours following the last bout.
Medicine in School
It is preferable that medication is administered at home and we appreciate this is not always possible. We have frequent requests for members of staff to give children medicine during the school day. Our office team are trained to administer medication and are quite happy to do this under the following circumstances:
- that these medicines are prescribed by a Doctor or pharmacy or are over the counter medicines
brought into the school office in the original box and/or bottle; antibiotics prescribed for 3 times a
day ideally should be given before school, as soon as possible after school and before bed, we will
therefore only administer antibiotics that are required 4 times a day; - that these medicines bear the child’s name, dosage, etc unless purchased over the counter. If the medication is purchased over the counter, it must be brought to the school office in the original packaging. Tablets removed from packaging will not be given;
- that you complete a ‘Permission to Administer Medication’ form available from the school office
medicines will only be administered during lunchtime and the children are responsible for
requesting their medicine. If a parent feels that their child is too young for this responsibility they are welcome to come to school to administer their child’s medication at lunch time; - Medication is to be brought to the school office and collected daily (between the hours of 8.00am
and 3.30pm).
Please note – if the medication must be kept in a fridge, please provide a cool bag and ice packs as we
do not have access to a medicine fridge.
We use Medical Tracker as our first aid system and you will receive an email to advise once the
medication has been administered.
