A Skills Map has been revised to support teachers in knowing which skills to include in their teaching, how they will be building on the skills that have been previously taught and how to enhance progress.
Intent
- Pupils will develop their knowledge of art and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
- Pupils will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques.
- Pupils will learn to think critically and learn to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design..
- Pupils will know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
The Art Curriculum Overview will guide the teaching of art; where each discipline fits within the whole school plan and the sequence of lessons for each unit of work
Every unit of work will be centred around the work of an artist, craft maker or designer whose work defines the specific discipline being studied. Examples of their work will be evaluated and analysed. The skills will be practised before pupils design their own work with clear reference to the artist’s work.
Discussion and evaluation will be a strong thread through every unit of work, including time to share the children’s work and gather peer feedback.

Enrichment opportunities
In addition to curriculum lesson time children will have opportunities to participate in:
- Art gallery trips and workshops.
- Show case art events in school.
- Promotion of the work of artists, craft makers and designers and where they sit in the history of art.
- Artist to school visits
