Our Vision
At Whittington C of E Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child is supported to achieve their full potential. Guided by our Christian values, we celebrate diversity and ensure all pupils feel valued, safe, and respected.
What Are Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
A pupil has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
These needs may fall into four broad areas:
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional and mental health
- Sensory and/or physical needs
How We Identify Pupils with SEN
We identify SEN through:
- Ongoing teacher assessment and observation
- Tracking pupil progress and attainment
- Discussions with parents/carers
- Information from previous settings
- Involvement of external professionals where appropriate
Our Approach to Supporting Pupils with SEN
We follow the graduated approach:
- Assess – Identify strengths and areas of need
- Plan – Develop targeted support strategies
- Do – Deliver high-quality teaching and interventions
- Review – Evaluate progress and adapt provision
Adaptive teaching is the foundation of our provision, with additional support provided where needed.
Types of Support Available
Support may include:
- Differentiated and adapted classroom teaching
- Small group or one-to-one interventions
- Support from teaching assistants
- Use of specialist resources or equipment
- Personalised learning plans
- Advice and support from external agencies (e.g. Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists)
Working with Parents and Carers
We work closely with parents and carers to support each child. We:
- Share regular updates on progress
- Involve families in planning and reviewing support
- Offer meetings with teachers and the SENCo
- Provide guidance for supporting learning at home
Pupil Voice
We value the views of our pupils. Children are encouraged to:
- Share their thoughts about their learning
- Contribute to target setting
- Reflect on their achievements and next steps
Transition Arrangements
We support pupils at key transition points:
- Entry into Reception
- Moving between year groups
- Transition to secondary school
This may include additional visits, meetings, and tailored transition plans.
Accessibility
We are committed to making our school accessible to all by:
- Adapting the curriculum
- Making reasonable adjustments to the environment
- Providing appropriate resources and support
Staff Expertise and Training
Our staff receive ongoing training to support pupils with SEN, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to meet a range of needs.
