Intent
- Pupils will gain knowledge and understanding of the interaction of people with their environments through geographical investigations. This will include: – place knowledge, locational knowledge, the study of human and physical geography and development of skills and fieldwork.
- Pupils will develop the skills needed to be young geographers
- Pupils will use appropriate geographical vocabulary
- Pupils will use subject tools including: maps; aerial photos; graphical data; fieldwork skills.
- Pupils will: recognise; identify; describe; observe; reason; explain; reach conclusions. In UKS2 pupils will learn how to: make judgements; evaluate; apply what they have learned to other contexts; hypothesise.
Implementation
- Lessons will be logically planned and progressive, aimed at equipping children with the necessary knowledge and skills that they will require in future learning. Children will learn about a variety of places around the world throughout their journey through school.
- One lesson focused on map skills will be taught at the start of each topic, which will be built upon in subsequent topics and year groups.
- Pre- and post-topic quizzes will allow teachers to assess the children’s knowledge before and after each topic.
- Where applicable, fieldwork will be used to enhance and contextualise the learning.
Enrichment opportunities
In addition to curriculum lesson time there are:
- Opportunity to study geography in the field in each year group.
- Whole school field work experience (place/locational knowledge orienteering day).
