Intent
- Pupils will learn about science through lessons and experiences which are based on enquiry.
- Pupils will develop their own understanding of the world through well planned science experiences which draw on the world around them.
- Pupils will develop scientific curiosity through exciting, participatory science lessons and science opportunities.
- Pupils will understand the uses and implications of science, today and in the future and will find out about a diverse range of scientists.
- Pupils will acquire and use a technical science vocabulary.
Implementation
- Children will learn about and practise the 5 elements of enquiry; pattern seeking, research, fair testing, identifying and classifying, observation over time.
- Science is planned to make specific links to the children’s experiences of the world around them and current events. Science is taught through enquiry giving children first-hand experiences and enabling them to understand the world around them.
- Children actively participate in enquiry based learning alongside school events and opportunities that increase their science capital.
- Teachers ensure that science content is up to date with current scientific and technological advancements, using resources such as primaryupd8.
- Each science unit is introduced with a list of relevant technical vocabulary. This is taught, used and embedded with an expectation that children will be able to talk about the world around them using the correct scientific terminology.
