INTENT
- Pupils demonstrate the school vision in all areas of the EYFS curriculum.
- Pupils will develop a love of reading through listening and retelling stories (fiction and non-fiction), rhymes and poems in different ways (including role play). They will have opportunities to widen their vocabulary in all areas of the curriculum.
- Pupils learn to read and write through synthetic phonics and read books that are phonically matched alongside using real books.
- Pupils to communicate confidently in speaking and listening; expressing their ideas and feelings about their experiences using full sentences in all areas of learning, with modelling and support from their teacher.
- Pupils will develop a curiosity for mathematical concepts (focusing on number and numerical pattern) and use their knowledge to investigate the world around them.
- Pupils learn the foundations needed for future learning through playing and exploring, active learning and critical thinking.
- Pupils will develop their foundations for future learning through exploring the world around them, past and present, culture and communities and the natural world.
- Pupils will have opportunities to create with materials and be imaginative and expressive in the arts.
- Pupils will be able to develop their gross and fine motor skills throughout all areas of the curriculum.
Implementation
- In all areas of the curriculum, the children will work and play collaboratively with others, persevere when trying something new and challenging and be responsible for themselves. They will build positive relationships.
- Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is to encourage a love of reading from the beginning. In EYFS we aim is to expose children to a range of books that not only develop a love of reading, but have been chosen specifically to develop their oracy, vocabulary and comprehension. These chosen books will be embedded in our provision through activities, story sessions and on display for children to access independently. Through this, children begin to internalise new vocabulary, language patterns and begin to retell stories.
- Pupils’ complete daily phonics sessions of approximately 30 minutes following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme. The children are encouraged to read at home and complete regular reading practice sessions in school focusing on three key reading skills (decoding, prosody and comprehension). They are given books that match their phonic knowledge in order for them to apply their learning with the aim of becoming successful, confident and fluent readers. Children are also given the opportunity to choose library books which they can read with their family.
- The children are engaged and independent in leading their own learning. They are able to talk about their learning and answer questions. Staff are able to communicate effectively with the children. They model language and introduce new vocabulary. Staff challenge the children where appropriate and use open ended questions.
- Our mathematics curriculum follows the White Rose Maths Scheme alongside the NCETM Numberblocks programme which is aimed at strengthening and understanding number. The programme focuses on subitising, cardinality, ordinality and counting, composition and comparison. Quality learning environments and meaningful interactions with adults, support children in developing mathematical thinking, discussion and language. Pupils learn through games and tasks using concrete manipulatives and pictorial structures and representations which are then rehearsed applied and recorded within their own.
